“Their mastery and skill was proven from the beginning, as the sonorous range of their instruments sounded at times softy and warmly, then dismal and dark, or powerful and resounding.”

Alchemy - Tuba Euphonium Quartet

As America's first professional euphonium-tuba quartet, Alchemy (previously the Atlantic Tuba Quartet) was formed in 1976 and quickly won enthusiastic acceptance from audiences and critics alike. Thirty years later, the group performs recitals and gives master-classes across North America and Europe, bringing their unique arrangements and classic approach to a new generation of audiences. Alchemy performs yearly at the Horn-Tuba Workshop in Jever, Germany where the group teaches, conducts ensembles, and gives solo performances. Members Dan Vinson, James Jackson, Gary Buttery, and Joanna Hersey perform with a vibrancy and spirit which sets this group apart. Inventive programming and a steady supply of new works from composer and member Gary Buttery infect their performances with life and brilliancy, what one reviewer described as “a musical fabric of pure gold.”
